Customers Tackle Suspect in Thursday H Street Robbery

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) First District Detectives are investigating a store robbery that happened towards the end of the Thursday evening commute on the 1400 Block of H Street NE.

At around 6:45 p.m., three male suspects, two of whom had handguns, entered the location and ordered the customers to lay on the floor. While one suspect held a gun, the other suspects began taking clothing off display racks.

At one point, several customers overwhelmed one of the suspects and held him down. The other suspect then fled the location along with two additional suspects who tried to get in the store through a rear door.

They were last seen in a burgundy colored minivan with unknown tags travelling westbound on Maryland Avenue NE. Clothing and cash were taken.

The suspect held down by store customers was taken into custody when police arrived, along with his gun. Several customers sustained minor injuries during the incident and were treated on scene by DC Fire Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS).

The current look-out is four black adult males, all between 19 and 29 years of age and wearing dark clothing.

Police encourage anyone with information to them. They are hoping to hear from residents or commuters in the area around the 1400 block of H Street or Maryland Avenue NE at around 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening.
