On Sunday, more than 300 people gathered to witness the lighting of the Community Menorah and to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. The BID and Hill Havurah co-sponsored the menorah lighting, which took place right next to the Capitol Hill George Didden Holiday Tree also known as “Big George.”
Community enjoyed 1200 latkes and jelly donuts with coffee and hot cocoa as they were welcomed by Hill Havurah Chair Howard Crystal. The children of Gan Shalom Preschool and Education Program performed, as did the Havurah Harmonists. Council Charles Allen (Ward 6-D) and Elissa Silverman (At Large-I) delivered remarks at the ceremony.
The menorah was lit by Bruce Pascal, son of Paul Pascal. The 9-foot outdoor menorah was dedicated to BID Past Board Chairman Paul Pascal for his dedication to the mission and vision of the Capitol Hill BID since 2003 as a board member and his seven years as Chairman from 2007-2014. Mrs. Brenda Pascal attended the ceremony.
Pascal, who ed away in April, was a pillar of the Capitol Hill community who helped establish the Capitol Hill Business Improvement District and was a ionate advocate for the homeless and returning citizens.
