The Fifth District Crime Suppression Team (CST) recovered a realistic looking BB gun on Thursday. They were conducting proactive enforcement in the Benning Road corridor on Jan. 2. While on the 1800 block of Benning Road NE, officers attempted to make with an individual, who promptly fled on foot. Officers gave chase and caught the suspect near the Rosedale Recreation Center (1701 Gales St. NE). Just prior to being stopped, the suspect dropped what appeared to be a holstered semi-automatic handgun but turned out to be a BB gun.
Officers said that BB guns are often the weapon of choice for street robbers because of their realistic appearance, and added that CST likely thwarted several crimes by making this arrest.

At 5:31 p.m. Thursday, a man was arrested on the 1600 block of Benning Road NE on charges of Distribution of a Controlled Substance.
At 7:20 p.m. Thursday, a man was arrested on the 1300 block of Potomac Avenue SE on charges of Driving While Under the Influence (3rd Offence).

Prompt and detailed reporting of suspicious activities helps prevent crime. If a citizen sees suspicious activity, or any activity that seems out of the ordinary, immediately call 911.
When reporting suspicious activity, give an accurate description. Here are some things to include:
Brief description of the activity;
- Date, time and location of the activity;
- Physical identifiers of anyone you observed;
- Descriptions of vehicles;
- Information about where people involved in suspicious activities may have gone;
- Your name and information.
